My aim in designing this comic book is to create a visual setting for the narrative of 'The Raven' that will help the student come to a better understanding of the story line by supplementing the literary devices and symbols that Poe used when writing his famous poem. It can be printed for easy distribution, displayed as a slide show on a computer or used on an e.book reader, iPad or other tablet. This is a useful resource for classes studying the Gothic Horror genre. It also makes a great addition to classes during the Halloween season! 49 pages This product includes; 1. A twenty one page color version of the comic with an explanation of the story and hints on how to use it. There are PDF and EPUB versions for use on computers or tablets. 2. The same twenty one page comic in black and white for easy printing. (There are two BW versions. Version 2 has no background which makes it easier to print) 3. A two page work sheet that can be used by students to record new words and expressions, make notes on their understanding of each stanza, and write an analysis based on their studies. 4. The first three of my Frankenstein comic books now in one set at a discount price. Included are 'The Walton Letters', 'Victor’s Story - Part 1', and 'The Monster’s Story - Part 1'. They all contain quizzes and other useful resources, and can be printed out in color, black and white, used as a slide show on a computer, or as a PDF e.book on a tablet. This is the fourth part of my Frankenstein comic book series. A fourteen page graphic novel based on the Monster's Story section of the Frankenstein classic novel.The language has been edited to appeal to learners of ESL/EFL or it can be used as an introduction to younger readers of the Mary Shelley classic or any student who enjoys graphic novels. The second in a series of short animated movies with attached learning materials to provide an introduction to the classic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. This movie is based on the Letters from Captain Walton section that provides the introduction to the story. It covers a core curriculum need in literature classes to evaluate content presented in diverse media formats including visually and aurally. The main purpose of this product is for students to take on the role of either defender or prosecutor of the main villain from one of the literary classics listed below. Using the resources supplied here they can investigate the book for textual evidence that will support claims that the character has or has not carried out any crimes or villainy and then, either on paper or in the classroom, engage in a mock trial to demonstrate their persuasive argument skills. The works covered are; • Frankenstein • Jekyll and Hyde • Dracula • Twenty Thousand Leagues Beneath the Sea • Sherlock Holmes – The Adventure of the Final Problem • Oliver Twist Resources There several different sets of materials that can be utilized with the novels I have included. They can be used alone or in combination. These are; 1. A PDF slideshow to introduce the characters from the novels and elicit knowledge of their ‘villainy’. 2. A set of ‘Wanted Posters’ in color and black and white for the characters; The Monster, Mr. Edward Hyde, Count Dracula, Captain Nemo, Professor James Moriarty and Bill Sikes. 3. A set of ‘rap sheets’ in color and black and white containing picture and background information relating to the history and alleged crimes of the same characters. 4. The same ‘rap sheets’ without the background information. 5. Student explanation print outlining the type of information they need to find for the purposes of the lesson. 6. A student note taking print. 7. A student writing print for making either a character analysis or a persuasive essay. 8. Teacher Notes print. These materials can be used with the actual books, targeted chapters, graded readers, or movies based on the works. This illustrated text is of an old Japanese ghost story from a book of Japanese folk tales called the 'Kaidan' that was published in the early 1900's by the writer, Lafcadio Hearn. I have designed this as a multi-media resource with a Teacher's Guide providing links to sites that provide detailed history of the genre along with more examples of the 'Kaidan' type of Japanese mystery tale. In addition, there are links to a haunting animated video of the story and a version that provides an added quiz and question prompts within the video itself. 56 pages This resource contains; 1. A Teachers Guide outlining the possible classroom uses of the text and links to other useful sites and videos. 2. An illustrated full color 12 page PDF version of the story that contains the full text, a set of comprehension questions and character analysis and point of view writing prompts for ELA students. There is also a short history of the Kaidan genre along with comprehension questions and a writing prompt for Social Studies students. 3. The same PDF text in black and white and another version with white background for easier printing. 4. An ePub version for teachers use or for students with tablets. 5. A student answer's PDF for the text questions. 6. An online Zaption video that contains an animated video of the story with embedded questions that can be used as discussion prompts by the teacher in presentation form. (Zaption sign up is recommended for this). The story is about two men stuck in a snow storm who take shelter in a small hut. While sleeping there they are visited by a woman in white who proceeds to kill the older man with her icy breath, but spares the young boy with the warning that he must tell no one of what he has seen. Later, she turns up in his life as a beautiful young woman, and the unsuspecting young man marries her. They have a happy life with many children until one night he decides to tell her the story of the woman of the snow..... The story is in the public domain, as are all of the ukiyo-e images I have used. Some of the others are m own work. The language has been edited to appeal to learners of ESL/EFL or it can be used as an introduction to younger readers of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic or any student who enjoys graphic novels. Some parts of the story are different to the original so this resource can also be used as a comparative media alternative. I have provided materials for this purpose in the product. This is part two of my 6 part series of Robert Louis Stevenson's Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It is an animated movie adaptation of the book and as in most such cases it does not adhere strictly to the original work. I made it with the idea of using different media as a comparison to the Robert Louis Stevenson work. This second video covers the part of the story where the lawyer Utterson attends a party at the house of his friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll. Later, after the other guests have left he has a discussion with Jekyll about the dangers of his relationship with Edward Hyde. Later, a maid witnesses a late night altercation between Hyde and an old man that results in the evil Hyde murdering the old man. The movie and comic book style script included her are a fun and engaging way of introducing students to this classic gothic horror story. This Christmas writing activity is a fun and engaging way of helping students to develop their narrative writing skills. There are eight writing prompts based around the idea that the penguins are making trouble for Santa on the eight days up to Christmas Day. The prompts can be used individually or as one long story to be completed by groups. It is designed to be easily adaptable to class size and ability and can be used with students working alone, in pairs, or right up to groups of eight. This is a combination of two of my published Picture Prompts at a discount of 25%. Both of these are still available as individual products at the links below. Story Writing Prompts for Adventure Mystery and SciFi Date with a Monster Both sets consist of picture prompts with essay writing templates, and large image slides which can be laminated and used according to the teacher's wishes. All of these are PDF files. The 'Date with a Monster' resource contains a simple set of picture prompts using cartoon images of monsters for stimulating the imagination for the writing of diary entries and newspaper interviews. These are divided into 18 picture prompts of two different sets of materials for a 'Date with a Monster' diary writing, and an 'Interview with a Monster' reporting task. They can be adapted for most levels and an explanation of how they can be used in the classroom is included. The 'Story Writing Prompts for Adventure Horror Mystery and SciFi' can be used for ESL classes and would also be suitable for younger students and others that may require further practice in writing and making short stories that have a beginning, middle and conclusion. These are divided into four topic areas; adventure, mystery, horror and scifi. There are four of each type with or without prompts, so the teacher can decide which to use based on the needs of the individual student or class. This is a short augmented reality lesson using iPads for learning the elements of Gothic horror. Students will use their iPads and a set of trigger images to find a set of fun videos that outline the major elements of a typical gothic horror story. For this lesson, students must have use of an iPad, wifi enabled classroom and have installed the free augmented reality app 'Aurasma'. The lesson contains; 1. Nine black and white jpg trigger images that can be printed up to B4 size. 2. Four page student print containing instructions on how to download and install the Aurasma app and use it. Also note taking and writing page for the lesson along with a brief history of Gothic Horror with links to important works in the genre. 3. Keynote is presentation software similar to Powerpoint that is produced by Apple Computer and can be used on a Mac or iPad. Be aware that this is the latest version (2014). Please download the preview if you are unsure if it will work on your computer. This lesson is an overview of the story of Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance during their two years trapped in the wilderness of the Antarctic. The story is told with the aid of a timeline of the expedition in the medium of a Keynote - similar to a Powerpoint presentation but a lot more versatile! There is a need in literature and social studies classes to evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats including visually and aurally. This Keynote Presentation is an engaging way of reaching this standard. The lesson contains; 1. A Keynote which contains 21 slides that tell the story visually, with humorous speech bubbles, and full narration. There is also a short quiz and the last part contains a short online video of a journal entry from a fictional member of the crew. The Keynote can be used by a teacher using a computer or iPad connected to a TV, electronic blackboard or projector. Alternatively, it can be used directly on student's iPads as a self study resource similar to an e-book. 2. A pdf file of materials to use with students, including a one page text outlining the story as well as learning materials for new vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension quizzes and a journal writing exercise. 3. My aim in creating this graphic reader is to provide a concise, clear and interesting introduction to the history of Halloween, from it’s roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain through it’s mixing with and absorption by other religions such as the Roman festivals of Pomona and Feralia and the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day through to the customs it has taken on in the modern era such as trick or treating and others. I’ve also added ‘odd facts’ about Halloween to each page to add some humour to the subject. RESOURCE CONTENTS 1. An eleven page PDF color version of the graphic reader and a second set of word and review quizzes for each of the five pages of the text. The first is a timeline summary exercise of the history of Halloween. the second is a set of story prompts to write Halloween animal themed horror stories. The third is a set of essay prompts for writing a comparative essay between the customs of Halloween and other similar worldwide festivals such as Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, China’s ‘Hungry Ghost’ and Japan’s ‘Obon’. 4. This resource provides a fun and engaging way of practicing simple story writing. With that aim in mind I have put together some of the materials I use in my own ESL classes and believe they would also be suitable for younger students and others that may require further practice in writing and making short stories that have a beginning, middle and conclusion. The picture prompts can be divided into four topic areas; adventure, mystery, horror and scifi. There are four of each type with or without prompts, so the teacher can decide which to use based on the needs of the individual student or class. I have also provided a teacher guide to some of the ways these prompts can be used, including a method where the students write different parts of each essay in groups. The materials include: 1. Large image slides with 3 title prompts each in color.
